An introductory tale

So, this blog is commencing for the dual purpose of fulfilling a requirement for my Culture Wars course, but also providing a space where I can ruminate on the topics I confront in my fast-approaching thesis subject. I'll be delving into the subject of public art, urban space and the competing ideologies that control community development. From anti-graffiti campaigns to the personal testaments of artists and activists in the D.C. area, I hope to use the topic of public space as a means of understanding the culture wars that dominate our society. Drawing parallels between topics seemingly benign or uncontroversial to some (like public space use) and topics oft-debated and emotional (like same-sex marriage) will hopefully shed some light on the various ideological differences that exist everywhere. The more we can see issues of extreme moral debate juxtaposed against the subtle wars being fought on our city streets and building sides, the context for reaching a middle ground improves.
